What Does LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy Mean?

LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy is grounded in respect for sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and relationship diversity.

The goal is not to direct clients toward a particular identity or outcome. Therapy supports people in understanding themselves more clearly, making decisions that reflect their own values, and navigating relationships and environments that may not always feel affirming.

This can include exploring identity, relationships, boundaries, family dynamics, belonging, body image, intimacy, grief, shame, confidence, and the emotional impact of living in systems that may not fully understand or support LGBTQIA+ people.

Support for Gender and Sexuality

Questions about gender and sexuality can emerge at any age and do not always follow a predictable path.

Some people come to therapy feeling clear about their identity but want support navigating relationships, family, work, or community. Others may be questioning, exploring, or trying to make sense of feelings they have not previously had space to discuss.

  • Exploring sexual orientation or gender identity
  • Coming out or deciding whether, when, and how to disclose
  • Gender expression and self-understanding
  • Navigating family, cultural, or community expectations
  • Internalized shame or self-criticism
  • Relationship and dating concerns
  • Body image and sexual confidence
  • Grief related to rejection, lost relationships, or identity transitions
  • Building self-acceptance and a stronger sense of belonging

There is no expectation that clients arrive with a fixed label or a clear answer. Therapy can simply be a place to explore.

Relationships, Dating, and Intimacy

LGBTQIA+ clients may face relationship concerns that overlap with those experienced by anyone else, while also navigating additional pressures related to identity, visibility, safety, community, and belonging.

Meggan works with individuals and couples around communication, conflict, intimacy, trust, desire, boundaries, attachment, and relationship transitions.

Their approach is affirming of many relationship structures, including monogamy, polyamory, open relationships, and other forms of consensual non-monogamy.

Therapy can also provide space to discuss how identity, community, family history, or experiences of discrimination may influence how people connect with others.

Shame, Self-Worth, and Minority Stress

Repeated experiences of judgment, exclusion, misunderstanding, or pressure to hide important parts of yourself can take an emotional toll.

Over time, people may internalize messages about who they are supposed to be, how they should look, who they should love, or how they should behave.

Affirming therapy can help clients recognize these messages, understand how they have shaped self-worth and relationships, and develop a more compassionate and authentic relationship with themselves.

Meggan’s approach is collaborative and non-pathologizing. The focus is on understanding the whole person rather than reducing someone’s concerns to their identity.

Trauma-Informed and Somatic Support

Some LGBTQIA+ clients have experienced rejection, bullying, coercion, harassment, discrimination, religious or cultural shame, or other experiences that have affected their sense of safety.

When trauma is part of a client’s story, Meggan integrates trauma-informed and somatic approaches that pay attention to emotional experiences as well as how stress and safety can be felt in the body.

Clients are not required to revisit experiences before they are ready. Therapy moves at a pace that respects autonomy, consent, and individual needs.
