Our Approach to Couples Therapy
There is no single approach that works for every couple. Our therapists tailor couples counselling to the needs, goals, identities, and relationship experiences of each partnership.
Depending on your therapist and what you are working on, couples counselling may draw from approaches such as Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman-informed therapy, attachment-based work, ACT, and other relational approaches.
Sessions may focus on helping you:
- Slow down conflict before it escalates
- Recognize recurring relationship patterns and understand what keeps them going
- Communicate needs more directly without criticism, defensiveness, or withdrawal
- Understand emotional triggers and the experiences underneath them
- Repair ruptures and rebuild trust after hurt or betrayal
- Strengthen emotional and physical intimacy
- Develop practical relationship skills you can use outside of therapy
The goal is not to decide who is right or wrong. Couples therapy helps both partners better understand what happens between them and develop healthier ways of responding to one another.
