How it Works

  • Collaborative Conversation: MI involves a collaborative conversation style. The therapist works with you to spark and explore your reasons for change in a non-confrontational way.
  • Focus on Change Talk: The therapist listens for and encourages "change talk," which are indications that you’re considering, or ready for, change. This might include statements about desire, ability, reasons, or need for change.
  • Resolving Ambivalence: A key goal of MI is to help you resolve ambivalence about change. The therapist guides you through weighing the pros and cons and supports you in resolving the conflicts between your current situation and the desired change.
  • Empowering the Individual: MI is about empowering you to take charge of your decisions. The therapist supports your autonomy and encourages self-efficacy, reinforcing that the power for change lies within you.

What It's Good For

MI is widely used in various settings, including addiction, health care, and mental health. It's especially helpful for people who are initially hesitant or ambivalent about change. This could include changes in health-related behaviors, such as quitting smoking or following a diet, or in managing mental health issues like depression or anxiety.

In essence, Motivational Interviewing is about helping you find your inner motivation to change. It’s not about the therapist telling you what to do; rather, it’s about facilitating a process where you can persuade yourself to make positive changes, based on your own values and interests. This approach respects your freedom of choice and encourages a commitment to change that comes from within.
