What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a somatic-based therapy developed by Dr. David Grand. It works by identifying "brainspots"—eye positions that correlate with stored trauma or emotional distress. When a client holds their gaze on one of these points, the therapist helps guide the brain and nervous system to process unresolved experiences. It’s grounded in neuroscience and works directly with the midbrain, where trauma is often stored.

Why Is Brainspotting So Effective for Trauma?

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting doesn't require you to recount your traumatic experiences in detail. That alone can be a relief for many trauma survivors. Here’s what makes Brainspotting so effective:

  • It bypasses the thinking brain. Trauma is not just a memory—it’s stored in the body. Brainspotting taps into the deeper parts of the brain that control emotional regulation, bypassing the neocortex where logic lives.
  • It works at your pace. Clients remain in control throughout the process. There's no pressure to "reveal" or analyze. You simply follow what your body and nervous system are ready to process.
  • It’s supported by research. Early studies show that Brainspotting significantly reduces symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. It’s used by trauma-informed therapists worldwide to support healing from complex trauma, dissociation, chronic pain, and emotional dysregulation.
